Week 4 Blog Post - Paper Doll by The Mills Brothers


       The song starts out with a man and his guitar. The first thing that pops out to you is the lead singers voice. Pure silk! I would compare it to a more soulful Elvis Presley. His vibrato and tone and the annunciation of his words are very similar to the King of Rocks'. The guitar playing that accompanies his voice plays a melody that immediately catches my attention too. It has a sort of lullaby feel to it, the way it soothes you. In the background, you can hear what sounds like a vibraphone. It adds to the lullaby vibes. I love the way the vibraphone resonates! It all comes together.

But then they switch it up mid song! First, they put you to sleep, then they wake you right up.
The piano and bass comes in all jazz-like. Then you hear the rest of the brothers start to sing the harmonies in the background.  Speaking of which, the harmonies in this song are just so good! You can just feel the chemistry these guys have with each other. The way their harmonies blend remind me of a barbershop quartet. All in all, the song takes you on a neat experience. And to think it was about a Paper Doll.

    First of all I love your blog's title! I would have to say this song is a bop! It also has a upbeat tune to it. I have to agree with you. This song does tend to put you to sleep but then sucks you right back in. It is really crazy to think that they are able to write all of this about a paper doll.

    I completely agree with you about his voice and it's soothing effect. I love the way you dissect this song. It really seems like you know what you're talking about and makes me realize things about the song that I never picked up on before. The comparison between a barbershop quartet and the harmonies was spot on.

    I loved reading your post about this song! I totally agree with how you think his voice sounds, it's so nice to listen too. When they all singing together it sounds so good, I loved it. I didn't really listen to this song that good in class, so this made me appreciate it a lot more! So thank you for that haha

    I really loved how you described what the song feels like to you. It is really cool that you talk about how the song is and what you hear from the song as you listen to it. I really like how you relate the song to other things like Elvis Presley.

      When you hear this song, it's easy to see why the ladies swooned all over Frank Sinatra. What he lacks in range, he makes up for in just suave and elegance. Just silky smooth. The lyrics he sings are very predictable and typical for a love song but because it's Frank Sinatra, no one cares! He can speak gibberish and people would love it simply cause of his voice. Week 3 Blog Post - Cheek to Cheek by Irving Berlin

      The first thing I noticed about this song was the different instruments it had! I heard some violins (or some type of string instrument), muted horns AND normal horns, and a piano. It's cool to hear the different layers of music in the one song. The more you listen, the more you start to recognize. Some songs, try this method of using a lot of layers. About half the time, it sounds like there's just too much going on. But listening to this song, it all blends together so well. To do that well, especially in this particular day and age, makes it that much more impressive because they didn't have the editing ability or the artificial instruments we have now. The ensemble really came together on this one.     I also just recognized how happy this song makes me! It probably has to do with the fact that it's overall upbeat and cheerful. LB 12 - It All Falls Down by Kanye West

      There's a lot you can say about Kanye West about one thing you can't say is that he doesn't know how to make good music. This is one of my personal favorites by him. He is one of the greatest music producers ever and this song is proof of that. It is one of his simpler pieces of work but it has such a nice vibe to it. The guitar mixed with that bass line just sounds so good. Then comes the drums and 808's, which Kanye is known for.      He addresses some topics that are so relevant today. He talks about how the evils of money and how we buy materialistic things just for the image. It all stems from being self conscious and he admits that he's a victim of this mindset. Love when artists are able to portray a message but also make the song a banger. One of my all-time favorite albums, it's a certified banger.
